My dance dream is to perform

So I used to love performing and I know I still will love it. I get excited just at the thought.

But a performance needs to be inspiring, exciting and good!

So I recognise for me to perform, for me personally, I want a year to really just work on my technique, on dance itself, my facial expressions and my body.

Currently, I am not at the weight I want to be and I feel dancing will be so much easier at my ideal weight. Although, I am a full advocate that anyone can dance no matter what size they are or what level of dancer they are. For me personally, in a year I am aiming on losing weight and dancing. You can check out my walking for health blog here: https://melanietoyeswalkingforhealth.blogspot.com/?m=1

So I understand in a year I don’t want to just lose weight, I want to be dancing but not just dancing, performing. How am I going to prepare for this:

Turn on the music and dance

This is the easiest one because it’s not about technique or remembering a routine, it’s just about having fun and dancing for as long as possible. You don’t have to have room to dance either, you can literally turn on the music and dance in the corner of your bedroom.

Spend time weekly on flexibility and stretching

I found spending time weekly on flexibility and stretching really helped with my flexibility while training in aerials and now I know how much it will help for dancing.

When I used to dance for class, I rarely stretched beforehand but now I am older and want my body to warm-up to avoid injury and to just be easier when I actually dance. Stretching and flexibility stretching is so important and spending time each week solely on this, really prepares my body in all the best ways for dance.

Spend time improving in errors I am weak out

Technique is important and dancing on the left side not just the right side because it’s easier is also important. Then of course there are tricks that need practicing and just movements that aren’t looking smooth.

There are lots of areas to improve in dance. There is no one that is perfect in every dance move or position but they will aim for perfection. Some people tend to avoid their hard to do movements or dance moves which are on the left leg. However, when it comes to challenges in dance it’s best to make time to spend time on them, where you can.

To increase my strength in my legs and core, I would lift up on my feet all the time, when I was standing at work, or talking to a friend or just before getting in the car. To increase my strength, so when I danced ballet and danced on pointe, my body was already strong to hold me up for longer periods of time.

Spend time dancing ballet

Since I am dancing contemporary, I am going to spend some of that time dancing and training in ballet. Why? So that I have the technique to dance contemporary. I still want to be able to do ballet movements and merge it into contemporary. Therefore, it is important I practice ballet.

And the very basic head spotting practice, where you pretend there is a spot on the wall and turn your body while never leaving your look from seeing the spot on the wall, is a perfect example, where I need to practice the basics to ensure when performing contemporary dance that my technique is just as beautiful and strong if I danced ballet.
