Why dancing can improve your health

I have danced my entire life and I can share with you the top 5 reasons why dancing is good for your health. Let’s begin!

1. You have increased energy

Call it a built up of stamina or increased energy but when you dance and dance and dance, your energy doesn’t lower it increases overall. There is a lot of stamina built in dancing. So of course any other activity or sport you will be capable of lasting the entire session because you have built stamina from dance.

Who doesn’t want increased energy? In my younger years, I had so much energy! Plus, I ate really healthy thanks to my parents. I was a vegetarian and the combination of dance and healthy eating didn’t just give me clear skin but gave me endless energy.

Just take dancing for four hours straight. Of course your stamina is going to improve. Every day, I used to dance for an hour in a spot in my room and then I would dance at school as I was the dance captain. So that was about an hour. And we had the floor space to move our bodies. Then a couple nights a week I would dance at night at a dance school for at least an hour. Plus, I would walk lots and even kayak for an hour at a time, all boosting my energy for even more dancing!

2. You let go of stress

I can’t tell you what I was stressed about in my younger years because I couldn’t work out why I was stressed. But after dancing in a dance class, my stress seemed to evaporate and I felt good again. When you are dancing you are in the present moment. So you can’t focus on what else is happening around you.

3. You body builds muscle

With dance your body does build muscle. Your body holds the strength through dance moves. When I was younger I had a four pack on my stomach, something I was extremely impressed by. I didn’t do weights. People commented on my muscled built legs. And when I started doing aerials (dancing in the sky), people would comment on my upper shoulder / back muscles. This was all built and defined from dancing.

4. You feel free

Sure, maybe not when you are focusing on the dance class and getting critiqued but when you dance for yourself in free movement, you feel free. You can’t focus just dance to your rhythm and fantasise about dancing in front of a large crowd, if that’s what you want. Don’t be afraid to dream and then find ways to achieve your dreams!

5. You can use your self expression

Self-expression is so important. In life we sometimes have to suppress our self-expression, whether it’s at work or when in public. Having the opportunity during the week or weekend to express yourself through dance is so important. It releases the rules surrounding you and you can let free with dance. You can practice new tricks and moves to become the best dancer you can be.

I hope you enjoyed my top five and hope this excites you to start or get back into dancing.
